چکیده

The influence of environmental variables (oceanographic and climatic) on the catch rates striped red mullet (Mullus surmuletus) by artisanal fishery was investigated using different time series models (Dynamic Factorial Analyses; Min-Max Analyses Generalized Least Square models). Climatic oceanographic survey data were collected at areas Portuguese coast (Northwestern, Southwestern South-Algarve) with distinct regimes. Time analyses reveal an effect fishing effort in areas. Variability M. surmuletus associated to regional multi-controls. Upwelling westerly winds main drivers variability across three but type relationship varied among them. A consistent between environment factors identified during peak period seasonal recruitment (spring summer) Southwest South-Algarve coast, Upwelling-summer Sea surface temperature-spring affecting short term (lag 2 years) rates. In increase SST summer, spawning, correlated rate a lag two years. Environmental reveals that fisheries management needs accommodate species biology better define future assessment plans (catch limits).

Aggregation dynamics and foraging behaviour of striped red mullet Mullus surmuletus in the western Mediterranean Sea.

Habitat-related heterogeneity of striped red mullet Mullus surmuletus heterospecific foraging assemblages was examined off the coast of Spain. Video-based focal-follows conducted on 122 M. surmuletus assemblages (446 total individuals) revealed an array of attendant species (n = 7) with composition linked to benthic habitat complexity; bare sandy substrata were characterized by homospecific gro...

Discriminating stocks of striped red mullet (Mullus surmuletus) in the Northwest European seas using three automatic shape classification methods

Stock identification is of primarily importance for population structure assessment of economically important species. This study investigates stocks of striped red mullet using three automatic methods of stock identification based on otolith shape and growth marks. Otolith shape is known to be a promising approach for stock identification but interpreting patterns of variance is a difficult pr...

Morphological variability of the shape of striped red mullet Mullus surmuletus in relation to stock discrimination between the Bay of Biscay and the eastern English Channel.

Truss analysis and length measurements were made on 168 striped red mullet Mullus surmuletus. Multivariate statistical analyses with principal component analysis and partial redundancy analysis (pRDA) were used on these measurements to evaluate the influence of maturity, sex and geographical area distribution on body shape. Truss measurements were important to quantify and discriminate changing...

Striped Mullet Mugil cephalus

The striped mullet is in the order Mugiliformes, family Mugilidae. There are nine species of mullet found in the western central Atlantic, the most common being the striped mullet, Mugil cephalus Linnaeus, 1758. There are two species of mullet found in South Carolina territorial waters, the striped (M. cephalus) and white mullet (M. curema). The remaining species within this family are found mo...

Are red mullet efficient as bio-indicators of mercury contamination? A case study from the French Mediterranean.

Mercury (Hg) is one of the main chemicals currently altering Mediterranean ecosystems. Red mullet (Mullus barbatus and M. surmuletus) have been widely used as quantitative bio-indicators of chemical contamination. In this study, we reassess the ability of these species to be used as efficient bio-indicators of Hg contamination by monitoring during 18 months Hg concentrations in muscle tissue of...
